I was thinking about the Pilot Episode of LOST today while soaking up some rays at the Beach...

After Charlie gets his hit of heroin in the lavatory at the front of the plane, the turbulence at this point gets extremely perilous sending Charlie to the roof of the plane.  He then exits after hiding his stash in the toilet.

Did anyone notice exactly how many rows he goes back to sit down?
Acording to the Transcrïpts and Wikipedi he finds the nearest/first available seat.
That means the the nearest available seat was clear back in the mid-section of the plane.

I'd sure appreciate for someone to go back and watch the Pilot and:

  • Count how many rows Charlie goes back.
and then...
  • Compare it to the number of rows Kate, Jack and Charlie climb up to get the transceiver.

I'm so curious now...

Transcrïpts:

(The plane continues to hit turbulence; people inside the cabin are screaming.
Charlie claws his way on his hands and knees through the aisle. He slips into
the first available empty seat and quickly puts on the seat belt.)

(He pants with panic. He gets the seat belt fastened and grabs the oxygen mask.
He quickly puts it on.)

Wikipedia says:

Charlie's flashback
A flashback reveals Charlie sitting on the plane nervously tapping his fingers. He sees the flight attendants talking, presumably about him, and quickly gets up to go into one of the lavatories. He reaches the lavatory in first-class (just outside the cockpit), enters and takes a hit of heroin. Before he can flush his stash there is turbulence and he exits the lavatory and sits in the nearest seat to strap himself in. In "Pilot: Part 1" he visits the lavatory to retrieve his stash while Jack and Kate are searching the cockpit for the transceiver.

Without rewatching the episode again, I remember thinking why didn't he sit down in front of Shannon and Boone. We see him pass them in the flashback, and there are empty seats abounds. I have always thought Charlies' location is wrong. IMHO - I thought he sat down in the front section of the plane.

Is there any way he didn't make it back to a seat at all but was thrown towards the back as the turbulance started?

I've seen the flashback so many times I am positive he sits down bc there is a scene where he is buckling the seatbelt, in fear. Now what could be possible is that he was thrown backwards during the chaos of the crash. What has always bothered me about the crash (treading into some of the foundations of purgatory here lol) is that we have never seen 'how' they landed on the island. Just the aftermath, through Jack's eyes, who was in the jungle.

Oh yeah! You are right Pen.  I had forgotten about that scence.  I am going to have to watch that again!

I guess it may be possible that he was thrown to the back of the plane initially and then found a seat.  I do agree with you about the crash thing.  We never saw the "landing" which is strange and a bit unsettling.

All I remember about the Charlie scene is that he kinda falls to the floor and nearly gets squashed by a service cart and then fumbles to a seat.

I think there are a lot of inconsistancies in the pilot episode.  Story lines that they abandoned, events that just didn't jibe with future story lines so they ignore them.  Their explanation that FBC (Flappy Black Crap)was just an anomoly on the film has always been lame.  I think it is just another example of how future story lines never quite fit with what was shot so they just brush it aside.  I also don't think they expected their audience to anylize every detail and movement that was filmed, they quite underestimated us.

Ok, I took on the challenge of watching the pilot again to see what I could figure out.

First, I grabbed a seating chart pic from http://www.blackrock.nl/content/view/17/34/.  They also have a listing of the likely seat assignments (although this is from Oceanic-815.com so it should be taken with a grain of salt).  After watching the scene where Charlie bolts though I think his seat in relation to Jack's is correct.

I've mapped his estimated route based on what I watched in Pilot part two here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/lpriano/seatingchart.jpg

This seems to be confirmed in Pilot part one because I noticed that Jack, Kate and Charlie seem to have climbed about five rows before reaching the glass wall. I saw Charlie crawl back through a curtain before buckling himself into a seat, which makes me fairly confident that he ended up in business class, approximately seat 7C.  Since Boone and Shannon were in 9 E-F and survived, that means that theoretically, first class was the only section that broke off and landed in the jungle.

This was fun, BTW.

Excellent research Lisa!!  WOW!  OK then... I guess that answers my question.

Wiki and Transcrïpt people need to clarify what "nearest seat" really means!  LOL!

ETA:  That must of been one heck of ride... Not to mention one heck of a  view!

ETAA: How on earth would they have survived that???
UGH!
