This sort of spins off of a comment Ralf made in another thread, that the church is being built for someone. That is a very interesting way to evaluate the building of the church, and in particular, becomes more interesting, considering the Jesus-esque qualities which were hinted at in the last episode for Desmond.

It has never been clearly identified as to 'why' Eko began building the church. I wrote it off as his way to seek redemption for his sins, and the loss of Yemi, his brother who was a priest. (And whose body is one the island).

Now I am starting to wonder if there may be a larger, more complicated purpose to the church. I wonder if Eko will continue building it once he heals. Or whether someone else may assist in its construction.

It`s an interesting thought Penny. Like you, I also thought it was just another way for Eko to seek redemption. Especially since none of the other survivors seems overly religious.
But if it indeed turns out Desmond has some new-found qualities after the last ´incident´, it could very well be. But I really hope they`re not going to try turning Desmond into some kind of saviour-figure...

In the last episode, wasn't Charlie still working on it when Locke returned? Although that could be due to a guilt trip for potentially causing three deaths. All I know is that Eko and Locke bear some serious contrasting philosophical points on faith. I think the church and the unfaltering faith Eko has will continue with his recovery (if he survives of course...). The effect on everyone else, and the part Desmond will play will be very interesting.

Refresh my memory, when exactly did Eko start building the church, I know it was after some event or vision.  So is the island telling him to build it.  Locke has now regained his faith so he'll be in on the church soon.  Charlie really started helping after his dreams or visions. Perhaps this camp will end up being the camp of faith, whereas Benry's crew will be the camp of science.

If Eko goes back to his "old self", I wonder how happy he`ll be about Locke building his sweat lodge inside the church site...

Eko started building the church in the episode where he had his flashback about Yemi boarding the plane. After discovering Yemi's plane was on the island, and Yemi was indeed dead, the church building began.

I thought it was after Eko had his vision. It seems like the island contacts certain ones and instills faith in them, Locke, Eko and Charlie perhaps now Desmond. It almost seems to protect them or look out for them.  This is almost itching for its own T&S thread: "A Camp of Faith, A Camp of Science."

I agree Ralf - The Island is its own 'church' so to speak: reaching out to preach its faith to some of the island inhabitants. I still believe Charlie's vision to protect the baby is something that has not yet come into play: there will be a need for that baby to be protected, and Charlie will remember his vision.

I'm anxious to see if these four men join to build the rest of the church. Now that would really merit the creation of a T&S thread

Well, at least after last night's episode we know why Eko was building the church. Because he owed one to Yemi.

I would like to see them finish the Church, but I think they have other things on their minds right now. Perhaps later - though I suspect it might mean more if they knew why Eko was building it, and since that was revealed in a flashback, and not to anyone else, they won't know that.

I'd like to see it built too... it meant a lot to Eko to have it done.

I hope so, it would be a nice tribute to him. I was so happy to find out why he was building it, it was driving my nuts.

I think the church is going to become of of those loose threads that we never hear about again.
