I read in Lost Magazine once (I know I am a total dweeb) that the sound made by the smoke monster was a MAJOR clue.
When I hear the blast doors slam -- it sounds like ol' Smokey.  The pounding made by the doors also sounds like when Smokey is rolling thru the forest and trees go flying.
We know that there is system of underground passages and hatches.  Is it possible that the sound associated with Smokey is when it makes its escape from the EMF there is a security system of blast doors slamming shut trying to contain it?  And ol' Smokey escapes by going up thru the tunnels to the outside world causing the trees to be uprooted?
Smokey is one of the main anomalies on the Island that has not been addressed.  I bet that S3 defines Smokey.
What are your thoughts on ol' Smokey?

What is that sound he makes? He made it right before he killed Eko? If it IS a major clue -- a clue to what?

Are you talking about the growling sound? It made the same sound the last time Eko faced off with it. I was trying so hard to figure out what kind of animal's growl it sounded like. It is vaguely familiar to me maybe from a movie or somthing.

The movie animal sound almost sounds right...I want to say the T-Rex from Jurassic Park but I could be thinking of something else...like teh T-Rex from Jurassic Park perhaps.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what comes of Smokey in teh future. Whether or not it actually has like a physical manifestation like a hand or Eko was just hallucinating. Perhaps it is some sort of composite of lost souls on the island.

Yup, Mark that is what I always thought of too - the T-Rex in Jurassic Park. I wonder if there is a prehistoric property to the Smokey creature?

I have a little theory about Smokey, that he appears differently to different people deopending on what you are seeking.  Are we certain the sound is the same every time?  I guess I should rewatch Locke's encounter vs. Eko's.

When he appeared in front of Juliet and Kate the first time, while they were hiding inside the tree, there was that white light again. And the flashes, almost like taking pictures. and then he left. Does this mean they were considered good? Why did Smokey then come back the following morning? Or if someone is operating Smokey, why send him back?

The roaring noise is definately like the JP T-rex, but the clicking noise reminded me of the velociraptors from JP, almost like an 'echo location' noise

The flashy light was what got me last night. It seemed to be focusing it mostly on Juliet, maybe because it never had the chance to get to her before, so for him she's like new and needs to be "read" or whatever the hell he does.

Yeah, posts I read at LTV suggest it was reading her... and that the lights we saw while it took "pictures" like it did for Echo, may just be because it was at night, rather than during the day like when it encountered Echo. I dunno, just saying what I've read.

That is an interesting theory, I don`t remember if Locke met him during night or day. Wasnt there a white light then as well? I can not really remember lol.

Day time when Locke met Smokey for the first time. I kinda seem to remember him squinting a bit, but I dunno... shall I check my dvd? Does anyone know which epi it was? LOL.

We never really saw what came at night for Kate and Jules, could there be 2 smokeys?  A 'Light' one and a 'Dark' one?  to fit in with the light/dark themes that keep playing out, like Kate toying with the backgammon board in last nights epi.  The light one came at night, didnt hurt them, just "read" them, the dark one came after them at the fence.  Im just sayin.....

There's no change in light or anything when Locke first encounters Smokey. It just comes from in front and above.

Why does he make the Jurassic Park TRex noise in the Pilot episode, but then most of the time in Season 2 we hear him making a clicking sound......???? I am referring to Season 2 when Charlie and Eko encounter him in the jungle. No LOUD Trexing' Pilot sound. Just some subtle noises. And that clicking.....wtf? He's like a photographer. Which, in my typical stream of consciousness thoughts, leads me to this:

I remember reading, somewhere, that the sound of Smokey is that of a subway. Is the major clue of him the fact he is taking in images of the Losties -- hence got that Subway sound from Rose and THAT is why he sounded familiar to her in the Pilot episode?????

The sound he makes when he is whisping through the jungle is the sound of a taxi's receipt being printed out, I believe. Which is where they said Rose would recognize the sound.
