Episode 4.02: "Confirmed Dead" (multi-centric flashback) Airdate: February 7, 2008, 9 p.m. Written by: Drew Goddard & Brian K. Vaughan Directed by: Stephen Williams Episode Descrïption: The survivors begin to question the intentions of their supposed rescuers when four strangers arrive on the island. Guest Stars: Ken Leung as Miles, Jeremy Davies as Daniel Faraday, Rebecca Mader as Charlotte, Jeff Fahey as Frank Lapidus, Mira Furlan as Danielle Rousseau, Tania Raymonde as Alex, Blake Bashoff as Karl, Marsha Thomason as Naomi, Lance Reddick as Matthew Abaddon, Jill Kuramoto as female anchor, Necar Zadegan as translator, Azure McCall as Mrs. Gardner and Kanayo Chiemelu as African/Tunisian man. NEW! Flashback Spoilers: The episode opens with divers 5000 feet below surface. They find a baggage on the ocean floor and Oceanic 815. The news on the television says that divers were searching for sunken boats in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Bali. Daniel is watching the news, sobbing and shaking. His wife asks why he's so upset about the news and he says he doesn't know. It's raining hard and the helicopter's shaking like crazy. They all need to bail. Miles tells Daniel to go first and he throws him out. He hits the ground hard. He gets up, hears people coming toward him, puts a gun in his back pocket, and then Jack and Kate arrive and introduce themselves. Miles drives up to a house. The person on the radio says that the plane crash was the worst case scenario. A rescue mission is unlikely because of how deep it is and the pictures they have means all 324 passengers are confirmed dead. He grabs his briefcase and goes to the door. A black woman named Mrs. Gardner opens the door and lets him in. Miles asks which room, and she points upstairs. He gathers some things and tells her not to go upstairs no matter what happens or what she hears. He then says he's charging $200 instead of $100, explaining the increase because he found out from the cops that her grandson was murdered. He goes into the room. He sets down some really weird device which spins at the bottom as he plugs it in. He looks around the room and starts talking to a ghost (the ghost cannot be seen or heard). Miles tells the ghost that he isn't doing his grandma any good by staying. He's just causing her pain. He then says that he wants to go downstairs and tell her he's gone, but he must first show him where "it" is. Then, there's a noise and he opens a secret compartment which has a ton of cash and some heroin. He takes the cash, unplugs his device and tells the ghost that he can go now. Miles goes downstairs and tells Mrs. Gardner it worked and that he's at peace now. At Medenine, Tunisia, Charlotte picks up a paper that says Flight 815 has been recovered. She and her friend go into an excavation site, where there are bones of a polar bear in the middle of a desert. After some digging around, she finds a collar that has a DHARMA sign on it. She smiles. Frank is watching the coverage of the crash. They've set up a hotline for family members to call for ID. They have confirmation that one of the bodies is the pilot, whose photo flashes on the screen. While they flash to his corpse, he looks closely and freaks out. He calls the hotline and asks to speak to a supervisor, saying that it isn't him. They say it is him and they are certain. He says they're wrong because he always wears his wedding ring and the body doesn't have it on. They say it must've fell off. He says they're wrong and he knows this because he was supposed to be the pilot of Flight 815, but he was replaced. Naomi is speaking to Matthew Abaddon. She sees the team and says they're the wrong people for the mission. They don't any have military or field experience. She says it'd be a disaster without protection. Matthew says that she is the protection. She says it's a high risk, covert operation in unstable territory. She then describes the team one by one, calling Daniel a "headcase," Miles a "ghostbuster," Charlotte an "anthropologist" and Frank a "drunk." She asks what do they do if they run into any of the survivors. He says there were none. She says she knows but what if there were survivors. He raises his voice and says there were none. He tells her not to ask any questions and just do what she's told. He tells her that each of the four has a specific purpose on the mission and that everything relies on her getting them in and out of the island and preventing anyone from getting killed. He asks if she can do it. She says yes. NEW! On-Island Spoilers: It features Ken Leung as Miles, a brilliant mathematician in his late 30s and a deep thinker who is capable of great insights and has a tremendous knowledge across various scientific fields. He sometimes struggles socially by being too direct and disconnected in his interpersonal relationships. While an empiricist by trade he is humbled and fascinated by the magic and mystery of all in this world that cannot be explained by science. It features Rebecca Mader as Charlotte, a very successful academic in her late 20s who also knows how to handle herself in the real world. She is very attractive in a naturalistic, athletic way, her looks are only one small part of charms. Precocious, loquacious, and funny. On a personal level it is hard to crack the hard shell of poise and certainty around her, but when it does crack its like an egg; lots of repressed and pent up emotions spill out. She will appear on the island. It features Jeff Fahey as Frank Lapidus, the pilot of the helicopter responsible for bringing the freighter people to the island. Daniel, Jack and Kate are walking. He's really odd and he speaks like a crazy person. They ask him how many are on his team and where they are. He says four. He speaks quickly and nervously and says if he had a phone, he'd be able to find them. Kate says they have a phone. He calls George on the sat phone. George asks what happened, and Daniel says he doesn't know. There was an electrical storm, everything went dead and he jumped out. He says he's speaking with some of the survivors. George asks if he's on speaker and Daniel excuses himself. Kate tells Jack not to worry because Naomi covered their tracks. Jack asks Kate if she's sure, nodding his head toward the gun in Daniel's back pocket. Daniel returns, telling them that the ship has no communication with anyone else, but they each have transponders that will signal to the ship. Daniel asks where the rest of the people are. Locke is looking up at the rain. Hurley says it's a monsoon and asks what Locke's doing. Locke says it's about to pass, and after a second it stops. Locke is leading the group to the east. Sawyer asks why because the barracks are at the south. Locke says that they have to make a detour to go to a cabin because Walt told him to. Juliet approaches Sayid. He asks Juliet why Ben would say the people coming were going to kill them. Juliet says because he's a liar or because they do want to kill them. She then asks how many guns he has left. Jack, Kate and Daniel find a metal box. Kate asks if it's from the chopper. Daniel stutters and said they dropped it to reduce weight. Jack lifts what appears to be a gas mask and asks what it's for. Daniel looks around nervously and says he wasn't the one in charge of packing. Jack and Kate look at each other. Jack asks why he brought the gun. He nervously says for precaution. Jack asks for what and Daniel says that rescuing them isn't their primary objective. Jack asks what is, and then the phone beeps. They've picked up Miles' position. Sawyer asks what Locke meant when he said he saw a taller Walt. He says that Walt told him that he had work to do. He had to stop Naomi from bringing the rest of her people. Sawyer asks why he didn't ask Walt any questions, and he says because Ben shot him and Walt saved him. Locke lifts his shirt to show his wound, saying the bullet went through him and he's lucky he only has one kidney or he'd be dead. Jack, Kate and Daniel see Miles unconscious. Jack approaches him, but he jumps up and points a gun on Jack. Daniel implores him to stop, saying they're here to help. Kate tries to grab Daniel's gun, but Miles sees her and tells her to back up. Miles asks Kate where Naomi is. Miles knows Naomi is dead. Daniel says she isn't and so does Kate. Miles says that Naomi doesn't have a sister. It was just a code she must use if something goes wrong. Jack and Kate says that it was Locke who killed her. Miles demands to be taken to Naomi's body. Kate says that even if they took him there, he wouldn't know how she died and he shouts that he would know. Miles talks to Naomi's dead body. Daniel remarks that the light is strange on the island because it doesn't scatter quite right. Miles comes back and says that they didn't kill her; that it happened exactly how they said it did. Then, they get a reading on the third member of their team and Miles says they need to go to her. Jack demands they put the guns down. Miles asks why would he do that. Jack says because they'll have guns pointed at their heads since the other survivors are in the jungle. Miles asks Jack how stupid he thinks he is, then suddenly, shots hit the ground. Juliet and Sayid emerge from the jungle, and the two guys surrender. Charlotte is hanging upside down. Her parachute is stuck on a tree. She drops to the water and looks at the island, smiling. Then Locke finds her. Sayid asks Daniel and Miles a few questions, most notably why aren't the two surprised they're alive. Miles answers back sarcastically. Charlotte asks a bunch of questions to Locke and the others. She asks how many are they. Hurley answers her, but Locke interrupts. Then, she asks Claire if she gave birth to Aaron on the island. Claire says yes and Charlotte is amazed. Locke asks her a few questions. He asks how many are in her team. She says there are four of them. He asks where their chopper is. She says that she doesn't know since she had to jump out before the pilot put it down. Then, Locke says they aren't interested in being found. Frank is hurt and he falls down. He looks up and sees a giant cow. His phone is dead so he fires a flare which Locke's crew sees. Charlotte is excited and suggests they go toward it because it's someone from her crew. Locke says no, but Claire and Sawyer object. Locke says that whatever they came for, it wasn't them. Charlotte says she's going and doesn't need permission, and in the middle of the argument they hear a gunshot. Ben got a gun and shot Charlotte. Locke checks to see if she's dead. It turns out she has a bullet proof vest. Jack and the others find Frank, and he tells them where the chopper is. Sayid says the helicopter is still operational. Miles promises to tell Jack what their mission is if he gives him the phone. Jack gives it to him and he calls Newcastle, but he isn't available. Myles doesn't want to bring Naomi's dead body, oddly saying "it's not her, it's just me." Frank talks to Juliet and he figures out that she wasn't on the plane. There's a commotion and Miles finally blurts out that their mission is to find Ben. He shows them a photo of Ben and he shouts "where is he?" The others want to kill Ben, but Locke says they can't because he has information and answers that he needs. Locke asks about the black smoke. Ben says he doesn't know. Then, Ben starts saying Charlotte's full name, her birthday, where she studied, where she was raised and who raised her. He says the names of the rest of her crew. He says they're a threat and he knows that they want him. Locke asks how he knows this, and Ben says because he has a spy on their freighter. |
