Dr. Marvin Candle is featured wearing a lab coat in the Swan Station 3/6 Orientation film. He presents a background of the DHARMA Initiative and instructs the station three team on the protocol which must be conducted within the facility. The protocol involves entering the Numbers into a computer and pressing execute, which will reset a timer to 108 minutes. This process must be repeated continously, never allowing the timer to reach zero.  It appears Dr. Candle doesn't have any use of his left arm, which may be a prosthetic.

He (or an identical-appearing man) is also featured in the Pearl Station 5/6 Orientation video, however, he now calls himself Dr. Mark Wickmund, and appears wearing a blazer; he also appears to have the use of his left arm.  He tells the inhabitants of this station that it is imperative that they observe the inhabitants of the other station very carefully, and record all their activities in detail, and afterwards send their notes through a pneumatic tube.

What is Candle's other name from the ? episode??

Anyway, does anyone have a theory why Candle would pretend to be an amputee in the Swan video, when he isn't? Like the beard worn by Zeke, I think that much of his demeanor in that video was an act. It is apparent to me Candle told the truth in the Swan video about the importance of the button, he perhaps misled the viewer about the true nature of his appearance. Then, he misled the Pearl viewer of the true nature of the situation, and presented himself in his normal appearance, and perhaps his normal name.

Or, the simpler theory is that something happened to him after the Pearl video was formed that caused him to lose his arm. But I doubt, since its Lost, that the answer is that simple.

The good doctor is seen again providing introductory information at registration for the Dharma Initiative. He discusses some unique properties of the island.

Yet he is not seen in Ben's Dharma island flashbacks. I was hoping to see him outside the reel.
