Jack, Kate and Charlie find the cockpit section of the aircraft where the Pilot is still alive, in his seat, apparently just woken up from a concussion. The Pilot informs Jack that the Flight 815 plane was 1,000 miles off course when it went down and had no radio contact. As they are talking, the Monster attacks, and pulls the Pilot out of the cockpit. When things settle down, Kate and Charlie discover the Pilot's body up high in a tree.

I think that Greg Grunberg has been in at least a cameo role in all of JJ Abrams shows. I think I read someplace that they were even childhood friends.
If the Pilot had survived, he in fact would have wound up being the leader of the group on the Island. the character could not survive if the Jack, Kate, Locke, whos the boss theme was to take off. The whole show would have been different.
