Discuss this mystery character here.
We learn about him in "I DO" a reference to Jacob with a 'list' is made. It appears that whatever list this Jacob made, Jack was not on it.

Biblically, Jacob was father to Benjamin. He was twin brother to Esau and while they were twins, they were quite different - Jacob considered quiet and reflective and Esau described as a 'ruddy hunter'. Esau sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of soup, and later Jacob fooled his blind father into thinking he was his brother Esau. LOST seems to use a lot of biblical names and references. I am struck by the Bad Twin reference in this story.

Wow - leave it to the Top Dog to find all these symbolic connections to this character.

Maybe Jacob and Ben are twins? *gasp*

Reading over at the 'lage some loosely based discussion that Jacob could be Smokey.
What do you think?

Me neither.. unless they could twist it to be REALLY cool, it just would be too strange.

I agree. The discussion at the 'Lage on it dropped for now but I am anxious to see more of Smokey this season and think about this Jacob angle when we do.

I remember thinking Jacob may have been Patchy, well that was a dumb idea. In essence, we have a few suspects:

Smokey --very unlikely IMHO
Christian Shepherd -- just humor me
A Lostie that is a mole - i just thought of this
Someone we have seen in a flashback
A completely new character -- i hope this is not the case. Someone familiar would be more interesting.

If it`s someone out of the Losties, the most likely to me seems to be Jack. Possibly without him knowing it.
And their names are kinda similar

We know now he is not a Lostie, or an Other for that matter.
Who is he? What is he? Why the voodoo ash/volcano protection?

Two questions from Lostpedia to ponder:

How can Jacob move objects?

Why are all of The Others so genuinely in awe of Jacob if they've never seen or talked to him?

Wasn't Dharma, per the Orientation video, experimenting on some type of paranormal stuff? Like mind control, moving of object stuff?

What if he is a product of Dharma's experimentation? Some sort of cast away "guinea pig" that may have become too powerful than they had anticipated?

From the Orientation episode (and film): Dharma studies "parapsychology."

I killed a wiki for you:

Quote :

Parapsychology is a field of study concerned with the investigation of evidence for alleged paranormal events such as psychokinesis, clairvoyance, and telepathy,[1] that are either rejected or ignored by mainstream scientific consensus.[citation needed] According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, parapsychology is the study of "[...] any of several types of events that cannot be accounted for by natural law or knowledge apparently acquired by other than usual sensory abilities."[2]The Parapsychological Association defines parapsychology as the scientific study of certain types of paranormal phenomena, or of phenomena which appear to be paranormal.[3] In contemporary research, the term 'parapsychology' refers to the study of psi, a blanket term used by academic parapsychologists to denote anomalous processes or outcomes.[4][5][6]

Parapsychological research is regarded by critics as a pseudoscience [7] In 1988, the US National Research Council concluded that it "...finds no scientific justification from research conducted over a period of 130 years, for the existence of parapsychological phenomena."[8]

Parapsychologists claim that parapsychological research is scientifically rigorous.[citation needed] Despite criticisms, a number of academic institutions now conduct research on the topic, employing laboratory methodologies and statistical techniques, such as meta-analysis.[citation needed] The Parapsychological Association is the leading association for parapsychologists and has been a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1969.[9] As well, "...courses in parapsychology are offered in more than two hundred colleges and universities in the United States alone, and degrees in parapsychology are offered at several schools..." [10]

Yeah, I forgot about that being mentioned in the Swan video until someone pointed it out to me earlier, and then I forgot where I had commented, so I didn't edit my post.

Ty Penny!

Happy to have killed that wiki for my sister

In all seriousness - this is pretty neat tie in to the original intent of Dharma (per video). I'm excited now that I remembered that damn speech (er, hubby did but shh!)
