This man is one of the Others who is first encountered on a boat by the raft group, though he is not specifically named for some time.  He tells them that they must hand over the boy.  When they refuse to cooperate, he orders Walt's kidnapping and the destruction of the raft.  He is nicknamed "Zeke" by Sawyer, because of his beard.

He is again encountered when Jack, Locke and Kate go after Michael.  There, after he faces off with Jack and is recognized by Sawyer from the raft.  His group surrounds the smaller group of 815 survivors, and forces them to sit down and talk.  He tells them Walt is fine, and "is a very special boy."  He also tells Jack "This is not your island. This is our island. And the only reason you're living on it is because we let you live on it." and warns Jack "not to cross the line."  He convinces the small group to give up their guns and go home, after he shows that they've captured Kate, and won't release her until they disarm.

In the Staff Station, he appears without a beard in a lab coat, and chastises Ethan for bringin in Claire without completing the List.  He refers to the mysterious "He" in this episode as the one who is in charge.  A fake beard and theatrical glue discovered in the medical hatch locker reveal that the ragged appearance of the Others is a sham.

Later, the Prisoner (fake "Henry") is interrogated by Sayid, who asks if the bearded man is "Him."  The Prisoner scoffs that "He is no one.  Nothing."

Tom is the one to trap Michael with the bolo, and tells Pickett that they must take him alive.

When the 4 on the list are brought in to the dock area, Kate asks him to take off his beard disguise, and he is chastised by the Prisoner, who appears to be his superior.  Ms. Klugh calls him for the first time by his real name, Tom, which annoys him.

Providing some updated information to Tom:

He tells Kate in the S3 Premiere she is "not his type." I know some of us thought this may be a hint that he is gay.

However, there is a ring on his left ring finger - maybe he is married? Also, to elaborate on Vincent's thoughts about the Hostiles - maybe Kate is not his type because he is not human.

Lostpedia interestingly posits both of these theories as well.

Looks like an Emerald ring - or a mood ring?  I did some research, and Emerald on a mood ring is the color of sensitivity, and may appear when a person is on edge.

They seem very buddy-buddy.

I really like Tom personally - I think he is a pretty nice guy as far as Others go. I'm just confused why he is suddenly Jack's buddy.

Maybe once (and if) we learn more about Tom we'll find they have something in common that has formed a bond between them.

Wouldn't it be great to have a Tom flashback episode??

Yesh! I lurve him. I was telling Rain earlier he is like a big teddy bear.

I find it hard to dislike him. I want him to be my uncle or something.

Yes, and whenever Jack or someone has confronted him about the "crimes" of the Others he seems kinda ashamed.

Was Tom a part of the original hostiles, or was he brought to the island later?
Or was he actually a member of Dharma - and for some reason spared by Ben (with the stuff about the polar bears he said to Sawyer).

Poor Tom
It sounded like he didn`t quite trust Ben either anymore though, from the conversation at the beach - just before he said they should have shot Sayid & co.

But he wanted to shoot those three - which means he wasn't really coming around. That made me sad. But I guess it was a reminder to the Tom fans he wasn't truly a good guy.

And maybe a reminder to all of us that nothing is what it seems, that anyone of them can turn out to be the opposite of what we think?

I think mainly Tom was just looking for revenge for them killing 7 of his people.
It was just a surprise, because all the time at the Hydra island he seemed like the best one of the Others. As opposed to Pickett for example.
And during the surgery, his trust in Ben seemed endless.

I thought Tom was a cool guy. If we knew what his motives were and why he was doing what he did for the island then we not like him as much. I think we'll find out who Tom really was in later seasons. I mean, just because he's dead doesn't mean they won't use him. Look at Ethan.

BTW, the actor who plays him was on a Fresh Prince of Bel-air rerun  a few nights ago. He played an ex-criminal who had to go before Phillip Banks for not having a job. He claimed no one would hire him because he had been in prison. Will had the bright idea and conned Uncle Phil into hiring him to do odd jobs around the house. When things started missing, naturally they looked at the guy. After implying he'd stolen from them, they found out Jazz, Will BFF, had borrowed some stuff without telling anyone.

It was cool seeing someone from Lost on a tv show that happened several years ago. Made me wonder whether or not he knew he's be a part of an awesome show. Yeah, I know. I'm weird.
