On December 22nd during an unknown year in the 1960s, Roger and his wife  Emily went on a hike in a forest near Portland. At the time, Emily was seven months pregnant but went into labour early while on the hike. Roger delivered the baby, and then picked up Emily and the baby to run for help. As they reached the side of a busy road, Roger managed to stop a couple to help. Sadly, it was too late and Emily died. She asked Roger to name the baby Benjamin.

Sometime in the 1970s, Roger takes a job with the DHARMA Initiative, courtesy of the same couple present when his wife died. When assigned position of 'work man,' he expressed his dismay. Roger tried to coax Horace Goodspeed into getting him a better job, but he seemed to resign and started drinking heavily.

Roger remained a work man until his death more than ten years later. During the purge, Ben murdered his father with toxic gas.

He did not bother to dispose of the body, instead leaving it to decompose in the van, where it several years later was found by Vincent, who brought his severed arm to Hurley. Sawyer nicknamed him "skeletor".
