Ruth is a former fiancee of Desmond who has appeared in his flashbacks.



She is Derek's sister and was Desmond's girlfriend for six years in Scotland, not far from the monastery in Eddington. They eventually made plans to marry but Desmond disappeared one week before their wedding. Desmond got drunk and had an experience that led him to become a monk. After Derek located him and punched him for deserting his sister, he visited Ruth to give her an explanation as to why he didn't go through with their marriage. He told her that he had a greater calling and for it he would sacrifice everything else. Ruth didn't believe him and thought that he was just too scared to go through with their wedding. She says to Desmond: "Next time you want to break up with someone, Des, don't join the monastery, just tell the girl, you're too bloody scared."

This revelation of Des's past disturbs me.

And the casting is off -- she looked about 18 years old I figured at first she was his sister or a cousin.

I agree Pen, she looked very young.
And the whole story just sounded a bit strange.

Truth be told, the story didn't "fit" into Des's history. I have been trying to think of whether anyone else had an "odd" flashback -- and this reminds me of when we learned Locke was in a hippie commune. It doesn't correlate with the timeline of their past we would otherwise presume at this point.

LOL I said the same thing about her age. She looked younger than I do.

Maybe it would have fit better if Des had looked a bit younger, I don`t know.
I think it was mostly just her age that made me think it didn`t quite "fit" in with his story.

I can`t really remember, but did Ruth talk with a Scottish accent? For some reason, I keep thinking she was speaking more Irish in my head LOL
