Emily Locke is John Locke's birth mother. After giving birth to John, it's not clear what exactly happened, but she placed John for adoption, and he was raised in a series of foster homes.

Years later, while Locke was working at a department store, Emily showed up. She said, "I want to tell you that you're special, very special. You're part of a design. You do realize that, don't you? That our meeting -- me finding you -- this is a sign of things to come. Great things."  When John Locke asked about his father, Emily told him that he didn't have a father - that he was immaculately conceived.  

After his meeting with Emily, Locke hired a private investigator (Frainey) to find out more about his real parents. The PI informed Locke that Emily is his mother, and that she suffers from schizophrenia and had been institutionalized at least twice at Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute (where Hurley and Libby also shared a past). He also found information on Locke's father, Anthony Cooper. Locke decided to approach Cooper and find out more about his father.

Anthony and Locke formed a bond, and began spending a lot of time together. However, in the end, Locke ended up being conned out of a Kidney by his father, who then cut off all communication with his son.

Emily visited Locke in the hospital after the surgery and explains the whole thing was a con by his father, and that she went along with it because she needed money.

Locke later saw a vision of her in his dream on the island, pointing at a Beechcraft plane as it fell from the sky.  This vision led to him and Boone finding the real plane.

Has anyone ever thought whether there is any significance to the vision of Locke's mom on the island, pointing towards the sky where he seess the plane for Boone and him to find, and eventually to climb into?

I think she was just there to catch his attention, and show him where to watch in the sky.

Oh, and Swoosie is a wicked name, lol.

It seems to me that the vision of his mother, who as we know through the flashbacks, has caused significant strife for Locke by introducing him to his father, should have been a WARNING to Locke. Unfortunately, Locke missed the warning, took it as a 'good' sign from the island, and now we have a dead Boone. Call me crazy, but seeing someone from my life in a vision that I associate as a harbinger of misfortune would NOT make me think "oh boy!" this surely is a good sign of what I must do now!
