Bernard is Rose's husband.  

He met Rose after her car stalled in the snow once, and soon fell in love, proposing to her only 5 months after they met.  He learned at that time that Rose was suffering from a terminal illness, and took her to see Isaac, a famous faith-healer in Australia, for which he paid a $10,000 donation.  Bernard believed then that she had been healed.

During their return trip on Flight 815, Bernard went to the bathroom in the rear of the plane. It was during that time that the plane broke up and crashed onto the island. Rose survives the crash along with 48 others from the middle section of the plane. She wears Bernard's ring on a necklace, because his hands swell when he flies, and has faith that he survived in the tail section of the plane. According to Rose, Bernard has a whole mouth full of sweet-tooths.

Bernard was separated, but had in fact survived with the tail section group.  Ana-Lucia and Goodwin first find him in a tree, where his plane seat had miraculously and precariously landed, and Ana helps get him down. When the raft group is found to be composed of other 815 survivors, Bernard asks about Rose. Michael tells Bernard that Rose is alive and well with the other group of survivors.

Bernard gets an idea to build a giant S.O.S. sign on the beach out of volcanic rocks, but it is a project that is quickly abandoned by the group he rounds up to help him, especially after criticism from Rose.  He does not know that the trip to see Isaac did not heal her until she reveals to him that she believes the island was what really halted her disease.  Bernard then realizes that Rose does not want to be rescued for a reason, and decides he wants to stay on the island also.

LOL the Dentist/rambo line made me lol.

But it sure didn`t take Bernard long before he started to talk. You know, when you volunteer to stay behind and do the shooting and blowing things up, you should realize you will eventually get caught and then you need to STFU...

That is something which bugs me about that scene. It may have just been a sign of his character, or it may be more important. Too early to tell. I'm HOPING these two play more of a role in Season 4. To me, it looks like they are setting it up that way. I'm guessing this is an instance where TPTB read us all asking about them online and indulged us

I hope we will see more of them.
I just took it as a "weakness" in his character, and in connection with the "I`m a dentist, not Rambo" line Rose made him repeat earlier. He has a different background than both Jin and sayid.

Or perhaps it has to do with Rose not wanting to leave the island. Bernard promised her they would stay there. So for him, it might not feel like it`s worth dying for (or watching his friends die) for a rescue he doesn`t need/want to happen.
