Vincent belonged to Brian Porter, however, when Michael went to pick up Walt, he told Walt that Brian said Walt could have the dog.

After the crash, Vincent is missing, but Jack sees him in the jungle. Later, Locke uses a makeshift whistle to call Vincent and gives the dog to Michael to give to his son. Walt and Vincent appear to have a special bond.

When Walt has to leave on the raft, and there's no room for Vincent, he gives the dog to Shannon. Walt tells her that after his mom Susan died, it helped to talk to Vincent, and that maybe she can talk to him about Boone.  After Shannon gets shot, the rest of the survivors seem to communally help take care of Vincent.  

Vincent at one point finds Sawyer's stash, and takes out one of Virgin Mary statues, bringing it out to Charlie to play with.
