Sun is a Korean woman who is Jin's wife, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paik.  The Paiks are a rich and powerful family in Seoul.

While still single, her mother and a matchmaker (Mrs. Shin) tried to set her up on a blind date with a man named Jae Lee.  He's the son of Mrs. Lee, whose family own a chain of the best hotels in Seoul.

The first few dates went surprisingly well for Sun and Jae, who did not expect to meet someone they would connect with through such an arranged style.  However, Jae soon admited that he was only going on the dates to appease his parents, because he had met an American girl at Harvard who he planned on marrying soon.  Somewhat disappointed, Sun told him she didn't want to go on with the charade anymore.

While walking back from the hotel, she serendipitously bumped into Jin, who was walking over the same bridge, having just quit from a job at the same hotel.  It was love at first sight, and they continued seeing one another (though they had to hide their relationship from her family, because of his poor background).  Eventually, Jin resolved to marry her despite obstacles, and went to her father to ask for permission for the union.  Mr. Paik said he would grant it if he came to work for him.

It turned out that Mr. Paik was very corrupt, and unbeknownst to Sun, was forcing Jin into a life of mafia dealings and violence.  Sun became increasingly unhappy in her marriage as her husband neglected her and became a man different from the one she fell in love with.

To add to this, they were having trouble conceiving a child, which caused more conflict in the marriage.  She was told by Dr. Kim in his office that there was no chance of their conceiving because Sun had advanced endometriosis.  Jin accused her of hiding this fact, and they got in an argument over it.  Later on the street, Dr. Kim approached Sun when she was alone to tell her that he lied, and that it was in fact Jin who was the infertile one; he said he told her the other story before because Jin was employed by Mr. Paik, and he was afraid he would burn down his practice if he had told him this.

Sun planned on leaving Jin and going to America.  In preparation for this, she arranged secret meetings again with Jae Lee to learn English, though he appeared to have other interests in her as well.  She also met with a woman who pretended to be a decorator, but was actually helping her concoct a plan of escape.  Jin was to leave on Flight 815 to deliver a watch for Mr. Paik, and Sun was to accompany him; but the plan was for her to walk out of the airport, and later arrange a trip to America separately.

At the airport, Sun was reminded of Jin's personality before he started working for her father. That reminder was strong enough to convince her to abandon her plans at the last moment, and stay with her husband out of the love she still felt for him.

Once on the island, Jin becomes overprotective of Sun.  Jin wants them to keep only to themselves, and not be involved in the other survivors' issues, but Sun, on the other hand, has an independant streak and does not just want to be a submissive wife.  Sun finds some escape in planting a garden, which later provides an herbal remedy for Shannon's asthma attack.  She later opposes Jack's decision to try to amputate Boone's leg.

Sun and Jin's relationship is strained once again due to Jin's jealousy and short temper.  Things blow up when Jin is accused of burning Michael's first raft, and Sun speaks English to defend Jin. Jin realizes that Sun has been hiding this from him, and distances himself from Sun.

When Sun learns that Jin is planning on sailing away on the raft, she works with Kate to hatch a plan to poison Jin - just enough to make him too sick to leave. Things go wrong when Michael ingests the poison instead; only Jack figures out the truth, but doesn't tell anyone because he knows Sun did not mean serious harm. Before the raft sets sail, Jin and Sun reconcile and Sun gives Jin a list of phonetic English words so he can communicate with the other members of the raft.  

While Jin is away, Sun becomes sick with worry after the message bottle they were supposed to have kept on the raft washes up on the shore.  She thinks this is evidence they may have died, but hides this fact by burying the bottle, so that others don't lose hope.  After this, she becomes frantic as she realizes she has lost her wedding ring, but later finds it again in the sand where she buried the bottle.

After Jin finds his way back with the tail section group, all was well for some time.  Sun gets attacked while planting in her garden (unbeknownst to everyone, it is Charlie, pretending to be an Other) and Jin is furious.  One day, he is frustrated by Sun's continuing to spend time alone in the garden (which he believes is dangerous), and tears it up, upsetting her.

When Sun begins to get sick, she obtains a pregnancy test from Sawyer's stash.  It tests positive and she is incredulous, and keeps this fact from Jin at first.  Eventually, she tells him that she is pregnant, and also tells him the news that Dr. Kim told her (that he is the infertile one).  She swears that she never had an affair and that Jin is the only possible father.  Jin tells her he believes her and that it is a miracle, and replants her garden, resolving to be more understanding with her.  

When Sayid needs someone to help with sailing Desmond's boat, Jin goes, with Sun in tow to translate.

Do you think she will stay true and not tell Jin or anyone else about what Charlie and Sawyer did?

But once she tells she no longer has any leverage against them.

I don`t think she will tell, because she will fear Jin will go after Charlie and Sawyer. Even if she didnt care what happened to Charlie and Sawyer, I dont think she wants Jin to have more blood on his hands.

And Sun killed Colleen too remember - she's had enough death in the last 81 days. I'm sure she'd rather forgive and forget.

Unless she's more like her father than any of us, or she, realizes.

That is always a possibility. She didn`t seem to hesitate much when shooting Colleen.

She didn't really have much of a choice though. Had I been in her situation, I wouda done the same thing.

I was kinda hoping Danielle, Sayid & Co was preparing to go visit the Others and kick some ass, but unfortunately not so far LOL

So from DOC it seems like Sun has a darker past than we thought - she was the one responsible for Jin having to do all the bad things for her father by accepting the loan.
She didn`t hesitate to threaten Jin`s mother either. And we already knew she cheated on Jin.

But I took Sun's choice has a choice between his pride/shame versus working for her dad.

In their cultural - that shame would be a worse fate for Jin than anything her dad would ask.

Although it was a neat twist to learn it was her doing that he became that way.

Yes, she was protecting Jin when making her choice. But I think it`s interesting this shift in their characters from the impression we had off them in S1 - where Sun appeared scared of her controlling husband, and Jin as the one with blood on his hands and being controlling. Then we learn that Sun was actually the one responsible for Jin`s line of work, she threatened his mother, she had an affair with Jae, and wanted to leave Jin (maybe because he had become something she orginally pushed him to become) - and she learned English behind his back, told other people on the island about this before him etc.
She was not sure whether him or Jae was the father of her baby.
And on the island she shot Colleen, although in self-defense.

Do you think that the fact TPTB confirmed in the recent podcast that Jin IS the father of the baby means he really is, or is just them summing up what we already know from "D.O.C."??? I wasn't sure how to take that -- ie: should we remain skeptical?

I never really was skeptical.. I mean, if the island can make Locke walk, I think it can make lil' Jin's swim.

Sun is very purdy.
