It looks like Sawyer might have found his dark place - when killing Tom like that.
At the same time, maybe it`s that kind of resolution the Losties have needed all along. The others never play nice, so perhaps it was time the Losties started doing the same thing.

Tom shot him on the raft, and took Walt. Not to mention Sawyer being locked up in a cage and nearly being killed by Pickett several times on the Hydra island.  To make matters worse, somehow the island folk were connected (in his mind at least) to Cooper/real Sawyer because they had him on the island. I don't think he's found a dark place. I think he's just had enough. While we all started to like Tom, Sawyer never saw those aspects of him. He reminded us how truly evil these people can be when he shot him, without mercy. And considering that Tom was the one who advocated really killing the shooters (which i didn't catch the first time I watched), I think he prevented someone's death by doing so.

But after the whole Cooper incident, Sawyer seems to have abandoned some of his old con-man personality. He has even stopped with the nicknames, even Kate pointed it out that he was now calling her Kate.

Yes I noticed that too. I think he is grieving inside. Seeing real Sawyer brought back the event which triggered his entire life to turn out the way it was -- loss of his parents, no identity to family, etc. Unfortunately he may not be the sarcastic southerner we love so much next season. But I suspect he'll be more genuine, and we'll see him grow even more with interactions between him and the other characters.

In dog racing the Greyhounds run around the track chasing a mechanical rabbit, at the end of the race the rabbit pops back into the building. If the rabbit malfunctioned and the dogs caught that rabbit they wouldn't race anymore, they accomplished their lifes goal and a prized race dog would be ruined.
Well...Sawyer has caught his rabbit, he has accomplished his lifes objective, satisfied his purpose in life. But unlike the Greyhounds he will find a new purpose and that purpose now seems to get off the island and to eliminate anyone who has or will get in his way.  Sawyer is a detirmined person so from now on the Others best stay out of his way.
