Hurley is a young man who usually has a good sense of humor and is well-liked by others. However, he struggles with weight problems and an eating disorder.
One time, he stepped on a deck, causing it to collapse and kill several people. He became profoundly depressed over his guilt, and his mother, Carmen, commited him to Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute.
Here, he befriended a character who he believed is a bald man named Dave, who seemed to want him to do uncharacteristically risky or irresponsible things like steal food and not take his medication. Hurley's psychiatrist, Dr. Brooks, showed Hurley a Polaroid photo which he believed was taken with his arm around Dave, but which actually showed nothing there. This was in an effort to convince him that Dave was in fact an imaginary friend or psychotic hallucination. When Dave appeared to Hurley again one night, he refused his suggestion that they escape the institution, and has a "breakthrough" after that.
While in the institution, Hurley met Lenny, a man who is obsessed with the Numbers: 4 8 15 16 23 42. Libby also shared a past with Hurley, since she was admited as a patient there at the same time he was, but Hurley was not aware of this fact.
Shortly after his release, Hurley used the Numbers and won 114 million dollars in the the Mega Lotto. Up until then, Hurley had liked his simple life, working at Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack with best friend Johnny. After being fed up with his irritating boss Randy, he quit, and went joyriding with Johnny. He got the courage to ask out Starla, a girl who worked at a record store. He had second thoughts about telling anyone he had won the lottery at all, but the gas station clerk at the convenience store where he bought the ticket recognized him and pushed him into the spotlight.
From that point on, Hurley seemed to be under a blessing and a curse that he believed is due to him using the Numbers. Hurley appeared to have incredibly good financial luck, according to his financial advisor Ken Halperin, however, those around him suffered injury and death. He got falsely arrested, his mother broke her ankle, his grandfather Tito died, and his brother Diego was left by his wife, Lisa. Determined to find out what is going on, Hurley decided to track down the source of the numbers.
He visited SRMHI again, where Dr. Curtis helped him track down Lenny. Lenny informs Hurley that Sam Toomey heard the numbers in Kalgoorie, and that Hurley needed to get away from the numbers. Hurley traveled to Australia, where he found Sam Toomey's wife, Martha. Martha told Hurley that Sam and Lenny used to serve together in a Navy listening mission in the Pacific. Sam heard the numbers one day, and used them to win a bean guessing game down to the exact number, that had been going on for forty years. Like Hurley, Sam fell into what he believed to be a curse - where he was blessed with good luck, while those around him had incredibly bad luck. Eventually, Sam killed himself to break the perceived curse.
Hurley was traveling back to the states in time for his mother's birthday, and almost missed Flight 815. He was just "lucky" enough to be the last person let on the plane. He took a comic book on board as reading material.
On the island, Hurley appears to be generally a fun-loving guy, doing things like making a golf course for stress release. However, when he sees the numbers scribbled on Danielle's maps, he decides to hunt down Danielle and find out what the numbers are. Danielle informs Hurley that the numbers were being broadcast from the tower by the Black Rock before she changed the transmission. She also agrees with Hurley that the numbers seem to be cursed. Hurley is relieved that someone confirms this because he is the superstitious type (he even believes there is a bird that calls his name).
When Locke and Jack decide to blow the hatch open with dynamite, Hurley tries to stop them at the last moment when he sees the numbers imprinted on the side of the hatch. Locke ignores Hurley and lights the fuse, opening the hatch.
Hurley starts falling for Libby, and confides in her that he has been hiding the DHARMA food for himself. She convinces him to stop doing this, but at that moment, the food drop is discovered, and Hurley now believes again that he is cursed.
He then begins seeing images of Dave again on the island. Dave tries to convince Hurley that he is real, but that the island and everyone on it is his imagination, and jumps over a cliff. Hurley is almost convinced to follow him (believing it is the only way to wake up), but is stopped by Libby, who kisses him.
Hurley woos Libby after that, and wants to take her on a picnic. When she is shot getting blankets (unbeknownst to anyone at the time, by Michael), Hurley is devastated. After her funeral, he tells Michael that he will go with Kate, Sawyer, Jack and Michael to get their revenge, and retrieve Walt. However, the group is betrayed by Michael, and they are ambushed and captured by the Others. Though Hurley is one of the 4 on the list, he is the only one freed by the Others. Miss Klugh tells him that his job is to tell the 815 survivor group that they are never to return.
