Danielle was part of a science team that was on an expedition in 1988 when they visited the island to examine the source of the Numbers transmission. At that time, she was seven months pregnant with Alex. After being on the island a couple of months, a "sickness" overcame her team and she was forced to kill them all, including her husband Robert and crewmate Montan.

Around this same time, she changed the transmission of the numbers to transmit a distress recording she made. After she gave birth, the Others kidnapped Alex, and she has been missing ever since.

Danielle has been on the island for 16 years, and has adapted in order to stay alive. She has become an expert at making traps, hiding, hunting and tracking.

When Sayid leaves the survivors, he is captured by Danielle. Although she originally intends to torture him out of fear he is an Other, she starts to trust him after hearing his story.  The two form a bond after he fixes her music box, which Robert gave her.  Sayid feels pity for her because he think she has gone crazy from being alone for so long.

Later, Hurley seeks out Danielle to find out about the Numbers he saw scribbled on one of her maps.  

After Claire was kidnapped, Danielle helped her escape the Others (and Claire was too drugged to understand it was for her own good).

Danielle hears the Others whispering in the woods, and seeks out the survivors to inform them that the Others are coming, and they can either run, hide or die. She agrees to help Jack recover dynamite from the Black Rock in order to blow open the hatch in hopes of hiding the survivors inside. After she leads them to the dynamite, she returns to the camp, and confronts Claire. Claire sees the scratches on Danielle's arm, and remembers that she was the one that scratched her, but can't recall why. Danielle takes Aaron from Claire and disappears. Sayid and Charlie track her down, and find her at the source of the column of smoke with Aaron. Danielle thought she could trade Aaron for her own child, Alex. However, it becomes apparent to Danielle that the Others weren't after Aaron, but Walt.

She later helps Claire and Kate find their way to the Staff Station.  Claire then starts to remember that Danielle once helped her.  Danielles tells her that she hopes her baby isn't sick, but that if he is, she hopes she knows "what she must do."

Danielle also traps the Prisoner "Henry" and does not believe his story about being Henry Gale from Minnesota.  She calls him a liar, and shoots him in the shoulder with a crossbow when he tries to escape.  She then turns him in to Sayid for interrogation, saying not to trust him (turns out to be correct).

Could Danielle be "Him"?
Think about it. After "Enter 77" she sure was acting suspicious. There is some discussion of this at the 'Lage too.

It would explain her weird behavior with Mihlkail. If he knew her true identity, or some secret about her, no wonder she would want him to be killed.

Pretending to be some nutso running around the island in fear would be an excellent way to spy on the Losties without fear of being found out. And don't forget her attempt to take little Aaron who apparently is important in some way.

I'm not saying I buy into this, but its definitely a possibility on a show where anything is possible.

Eh. I can't buy into it. I dunno. I'm too insistent on thinking that Danielle is maybe the only person we can believe.

hmmm, but if she was "him" wouldn`t mikhail have to know this in order to tell the Losties about it? And if she was their leader, why would he tell?

I still believe there is more to Danielle than we think. Just too much that doesn`t add up. Unless she is just a stark, raving mad lunatic of course, and she really has been on the island for 16 years without ever finding the Others (and it took Sayid like, what, a week to find her?).

Maybe "Him" is a stretch. I agree with that.
But she could be one of "them."

I'm with ILE I would love her to just be what she seems, but there is so much mystery around her. I suspect there is much more to her than we have discovered.

I`m thinking more and more that she is one of "them".

I was just thinking about her alleged "search" for baby Alex after Alex was kidnapped. If she had indeed searched that island, one would think she'd have encountered the Flame hatch huh??

That is another reason I'm starting to grow suspicious of her.

Maybe it has some sort of cloaking device!

She easily could have seen the building before, but as she said, she has avoided encounters with them to survive. How she looks for her daughter and yet avoids them is beyond me, but yeah.

What is strange is that a woman who appareantly has been searching for her child for 16 years, just didn`t pack all her guns and explosives and wandered into the Others camp?

I was just posting about this in the polls thread. Since the Hostiles have been great at putting on shows to hide their true intentions, could Danielle be a Hostile? When you translate from one language to another you usually keep the names the same, so would her husband Robert be pronounced Roe-bear? If she was going to pick a name of a child that would be a teenager know wouldn't she pick one of a teenager already on the island? Wouldn't she of known about the sickness if it was one of th eways Dharma was trying to purge the Hostiles? Could the capture of Benry have been a well scrïpted play? A big steel hulled research vessel grounds itself on the reef and then just disappears when even a small sailboat can't escape from the island? Has there been anything on the show that would even hint that she could not be a Hostile?

Yeah I posted about the diseappering of her ship in GD too Ralf. It seems strange doesn`t it, on an island where everything else seems to stay for years - but there is no trace of the ship she came with.

I wonder what Danielle was doing while the Others was packing up and leaving, and Kate and Juliet was mud-wrestling and running from a pissed off cloud?

Maybe she followed the Others to their new location to see where Alex goes?

I suspect you are right Rain - and she was following the Others because Alex should be with them.

And now she is planning on blowing something up? Maybe good, old Danielle is fineally plotting some revenge?

If the timeline we have gotten from her and Mikhail is right, she must have arrived on the island before the purge? Shouldn`t Dharma have noticed a presumably large research vessel arriving at the island?

And has she been wearing the same clothes for 16 years? The Others/dharma could theoretically have gotten new clothes say when Richard Alpert went to Miami/Oregon/wherever. But shouldn`t Danielle`s clothing be somewhat moldy and rotting after 16 year in a tropical jungle?

Well this is a good point, especially now that we are questioning her true identity. I just posted in the "Others Clothing" thread in GD about it seems pretty likely they are making periodic trips to a mainland for clothing.

However, another option could be a "clothing drop" that Danielle stumbled upon. I suspect, sadly (bc i say this so often) we may have a continuity error.

Just think at how, in what, 48 days?, Eko's white shirt was almost deteiorated. Add 16 years to that and she should be nekkid.

So her first words to her daughter after 16 years is "help me tie him up?"

I liked how Danielle had made the decision to stay on the island even if they got rescued. But I wonder if she would still feel that way after being re-united with Alex.
