Well, just to throw one more continuity kink in the mix--Desmond thinks he brought down the plane by not pushing the button.  When he checks the Pearl print outs,  the system failure occurred at 16:16, or 4:16 pm Island time.

LOL @ rereading a bit in this thread and all the minute dissection of every little thing, like newspaper discrepancies. Sometimes, I think you just have to take things on entertainment face value.
