Bai Ling (Achara) FREAKS me out.  She was scary.

And yeah, this has been the first episode I was like "eh..."  I didn't hate it but it didn't do anything major for me and I didn't feel I learned much.  May need to rewatch.

Thirds the motion.  Sad that the preview for next week is the most exciting thing about the epi.  But I did miss everything about the relationship between the Hydra and Othersville, so I guess a rewatch is warranted.

We didn't get anything new about that.  They live on Craphole Island, work at the Hydra, and Karl has never heard of the Brady Bunch, which means he was raised on the island.

Yet Ben knows who won the World Series, so they have access to popular culture but they don't consume it.  Perhaps Ben is one of those ultra-strict dads who won't let his kids watch TV and then they go to their friend's house and watch TV for hours on end.

I am going to agree that the episode did not jump out as great. I bet the writers were 2nd string.

lol - I thought the preview for next week was the best part too!

- They promoted this episode (at least on CTV) all week as the episode that answered 3 big questions:

1. Where were the tailie kids? (well duh - we knew where they were)
2. What happened to Cindy? (and we still don't really know)
3. What did Jack's tattoo's mean?

This last one is I think the most interesting question, because what they said is not what Matthew Fox's real tattoo's say.

I have a hunch (and my hunches are often right) that the meaning of his tattoo's as said on the show is VERY significant and a clue to the whole show - like the clues from Flashes - and LOST Time relating to the Adam & Eve skeletons.

That short part was the key to the whole episode IMHO.

Well uh I liked the episode actually , not a great one but an interseting one nontheless , feels like it's moving the drama. Besides it's raising some questions as usual :

1- I didn't know Cindy and the other kidnapped bunch were free to roam around the lab island . and I don't mean the kiddies but most people watching Jack were adults . Why does Cindy say 'it's not that simple' when asked on why she is hanging with the others ? Is it simple brain washing ? Why is that kid asking about Ana-Lucia ?

2- Now we are sure that the others do live on the same island as the losties , we weren't sure after we discovered the 2nd island , no hatches , the've got backyards . I suppose it's the place where juliet's reading club used to meet , remember ?

3- Does Achara has a gift actually ? what about all this mark thing .. Jack has one , and they mark juliet as a sign of rejection ( what is that mark btw ? ) . Are all our losties marked in some way or another ?

4- And where the hell is Locke ?!!!!!!

I have to rewatch - I actually fell asleep and missed about 20 minutes in the middle of the episode. Obviously it wasn't the most exciting one to me either.

I think the kid asked about Ana-Lucia because she was taking care of them right after the crash. She's probably the one survivor they knew the best.

I agree, Vincent. Of what I saw, that last line about what the tattoo says was the most interesting part of the show, and I think it's very important.

I kinda liked the epi, it wasn't quite as heavy as last week's, 2 memorable quotes 1) Jack telling Ben he needed a surgeon to watch over him and Ben replied "We had one, his name was Ethan" and 2) when Sawyer called Alex "Sally Slingshot"
I thought Sawyers little talk with Carl about was a great touch, I drew the conclusion that he was relating what he feels for Kate to Carl's situtation

I don't think the Others would've actually killed Sawyer and Kate. I think Carl meant that they'd kill their souls/wills with brainwashing.

Anyone else get a Cain/Abel vibe from Jules being "marked"? Maybe you could argue on some level that Jack with his mark also played the roles of both Cain and Abel. The leader and great man vs. the fearful angry man.

Jules symbol, if you connect the ends of each line, save for the longer one, you get a hatch-like octogan shape.

Thought they did a good job with the Sawyer/Kate resentment. Glad the lovefest isn't gonna be ongoing.

I was on the fence about Carl and Alex, but last nite, got me liking them. They're the Losties (and us the fans) compass and window into what's going on with the Others. Straight shooters with no reason to lie compared to Others like Jules or Ben whom we question everything they say.

I also believe that the tats mean something very important... just wish I knew what it was.

I liked the epi... nothing entirely special, but Jack is hawt and Bai Ling is creepy hawt.(btw, totally irrelevant info - but she has uber long and creepy nipples. Look it up. LOL.)

But the scene in the tattoo parlor was just... strange. Drunk Jack, taking his shirt off, "put it on me.... put it on me...", her crying as if he was raping her - I was just like, "this is weird..."

And I like Carl and Alex too, Borky. And agree with you, they are the window that we and the Losties need.

The sap in me loved them looking at their constellation.

I liked the episode too. Actually I think I might have enjoyed it more than last week`s episode (*waits for rotten eggs and tomatoes to start flying lol)

And I agree that there seems to be something important with the tattoo. But yeah, the scene in the tattoo parlour was a bit strange, but I thought it was to show the significance of the tattoos. And also that she was something other than a regular tattoo artist - the whole thing seemed to almost have some sort of religious meaning for them.

Isabel was creepy.

The boat thing - if the others were only going back to craphole island, why would they need that big ferry - if Kate and Sawyer were able to padle there?

the others has some strange society structures, cult-like or ancient - with the "eye for an eye" and the markings. Kinda like the Scarlett Letter LOL.

Manar asked about Juliet's mark earlier, I thought it looked like a Hydra symbol.

OK - I am going to throw this out there.

For a while now I have been suspicious about Jack.

He was the first person we saw when the Pilot aired, and he was nowhere near the crash.

I have not completely formed my theory about who or what he is, but this show made a little light go off in my twisted brain.

"He walks among us, but he is not one of us"

Think about that.

That is all I am going to say until I figure this out.

my guess is because of Ben being ambulatory. My first reaction was that the boat looked like the one Micheal and Walt took, the wheelhouse looked somewhat the same, althought from the bow it looked bigger. Might just be the same hull design, just different lengths, without screencaps I just don't know

I too felt the whole thing was more Scarlet Letter than Cain and Abel.  Although Borky makes a nice analogy.  Actually I thought the whole thing was pretty ham-handed and I didn't need to be beaten over the head with it.  They are both outsiders and have been branded, we get it.  We don't need Oliver Stone to direct it.

Although, I have to say this week's epi made me appreciate lsat week more.  I had a number of problems:

First of all, yet another Jack flashback.  Great, like we need another one.  And this one added nothing to his character.  Oh, so Achara's great gift told us he is a reluctant leader.  Thanks, we already knew that.

I can't imagine that anyone with the slightest medical training would travel to Thailand - almost the epicenter of the SE Asia sex trade - and sleep with a totally creepy and random woman about whom he knows nothing, then visit the sketchiest tatoo parlor ever and allow said skank to ink him with a low-tech tool that has clearly been used before.  Maybe it's my work, but I just kept thinking that Jack is going home with HIV. Very irresponsible behavior, especially for a doc.

WTF is up with Isabel?  Do we really need yet another creepy new strongman for the Others?  We've had Zeke, Ben, DeadDanny, creepy Russian guy, the mysterous HIM, and now Isabel.  Could they develop the existing characters before they add new ones?

Also WTF with Karl?  We finally get the chance to get to know him, the Losties finally have a source of info on the Others, and now he's gone?  So the writers can go off on some puppy love story line?  They're 16, I can not take their romantic storyline seriously, this is not Dawson's Creek.  I find their story much more compelling when it focuses on Ben's relationship with Alex, his attempts and clear inability to control her, and why he is punishing Karl.  The romance, to me, should be a means to a larger storyline.  I don't need to understand it.  (Apologies to teenaged members of this forum.)

Why is that idiot Jack helping Juliet?  Hello, you have been abducted and just had your cell downgraded to a cage.  You made an impassioned speech about "what kind of people" you think they are.  Why do you trust any of them?  Is it Stockholm Syndrome?

Kate's an idiot.  Let's just row back to Hydra Island and save Jack.  We have no weapons, no supplies, there's a delirious kid in our boat, and we need a bath.  There are 40 people on Craphole Island who could be helpful, including Sayid the Army Torturer and Locke the Hunter.  But let's just row back over there and save Jack!

Nice insights SM.

About Carl (Karl?). I remember seeing a preview or Lost Moment (not a spoiler, I don't watch spoilers) where he's standing on the beach with other Losties, so maybe he re-groups with them.

Traditional Thai tattooing emphasizes the basic power of the tattoo process and how it can reorient a person’s sense of self and their concept of the world. Thai tattoo arjan use ritual and mystification to elevate the significance of their tattoos.

I`m still not sure why she wasn`t supposed to tattoo Jack though, because it doesn`t seem to say anything about not tattooing foreigners. But it did say that you should prepare yourself for the tattoo with meditation and stuff.

VM- I found that quote very interesting too.
But I remember reading some speculation about Jack earlier, cause he woke up in the jungle all alone. But we did see him in the airport and on the plane, so I guess he was on the plane when it crashed. And if he isn`t Jack, but really smokey - if for example the real Jack had died in the crash - why are we still seeing Jack`s flashbacks and his life? I guess if he was an Other, he would have talked differently with them when he was alone with them.
