This may be spoilerish, by i dont give a crap...Charlie should be safe for awhile because the writer/producers have said that we can look for charlie and Claires relationship to get more involved.

so Charlie was singing Oasis' "Wonderwall"...no coincidence the line of that song..."So maybe you're gonna be the one that saves me"

I think the whole "Charlie's going to die" thing is going to be a trick by the producers... we'll think he's going to die but then someone else will... I could be wrong but that's what I'm calling at this point.  

What is the deal with spoilers?  Can we just make a rule that you should not read this thread unless you have seen the episode?

He was on Kimmel last week, he said he has no idea if or when he could be killed.  Probably lying.

First rule of LIF, is that rules are for LTV, not LIF.  The way I see it, is if the wiriters spoke publicaly about something, then its free game.

ETA, I agree, if the writes say it in an interview, then it is public.  Perhaps not canon, I think those guys lie.  But why are you at LIF if you don't consume every word you can find?  But I am down with normal "not-yet-aired-episode" spoliers.  I like to be surprised.

Anyway, I think we have destiny vs. free-will thing going on.

well, speculation on why Charlie won't die really isn't from the episode... but some may say it's not a spoiler either.  Me, I don't care.   (And I agree that TPTB lie, BTW.)

BTW I LOVED this episode.

What did you love about it?  Seriously, it didn;t work for me, I would love to know what you found so compelling.  Perhaps a different perspective would help me get what TPTB were after in this one.  I felt it didn't really tell us anything.

Not that I am one of those people who only wants to advance the mystery.  I love learning more about that characters.  BUt this ep just didn't speak to me.

btw..the ring lady, i think was the wife on "Waking Ned Devine". But what is up with her knowing about Des' future, past and present?? I'm trying to come up with something that makes sense as to who she is or what she is.

I liked the episode.  Love the fact that Des was trying to save Charlie -- not Claire.  I think that when Des turned the key, he traveled either back in time or to a different plane of time and that the jewelry woman was his subconscious telling him that he had to do the right thing and head back to the Island -- not stay with Pen.    I think that Des had the free will to stay or go at that point.  He chose to go back at the bar, when he realized that he wasn't wrong, and that blow on the head followed him back to the Island.

Wow.  

Funny story before I talk about the epi.  I was chatting with Scape online and she mentioned Supermodel didn't like the epi.  I said "why didn't Spermodel like it?".  Never gonna hear the end of that...

Anyway - awesome episode.  Loved the flashback format - although I don't think we'll ever see that again.

Thoughts:

- Everything we've seen in LOST needs to be questioned.  The space/time continuum that we thought was linear is now in parallels.  
- Scape helped convince me that the overarching thought behind this epi is that the universe does bow to the wishes of people.  There is no "fate".  As much as the jewelery store owner tried to make Des believe, everyone can control their destiny.
- Another question:  then what was the jewelry store owner's motives?  Is she blatantly trying to steer Des away from the fact that he can control the future???  I think so...
- Penny is still hot.
- Her dad would have gotten his ass handed to him if that were me on the other side of the desk.
- LBN theory of the night:  We saw Penny wake up to a phone call last season from some glacier area.  The phone rang with the picture of she and Desmond.  Now that we that TIME is in question, how do we know Des wasn't lying right next to her in bed?  Could Des had another chance and married her...then attempted to find the Island again?

At the end os season 2, the pic of Des and Penny was in Pennys place on the night stand...so how does Des have it on the island?  I guess at some point they could have got a copy made, but...things that make you go hmmm

Les, that's a really interesting idea that he could have been lying with her in bed.

And super, sorry you didn't like the episode! I loved it. I'm not entirely sure why... The format was intriguing, and kept me guessing for a little bit as to how it was working. At first, I thought he got shot into the future, etc. As I said in an offline to Algo, "Dude, this is so awesomely confusing."

It was interesting to see a flashback where the Lostie was actually there reliving it, not just thinking about it.

I loved this episode!  Like I said in chat the other day, I'm bored with the Others/Losties shooting at each other thing.  I was happy to see the writers come back to storytelling.  Things I loved about this episode:

No Paolo and Nikki

The flashback as "time-travel" calls into question all of the flashbacks for me.  I always believed the flashbacks were subject to the unreliable narrator, which I think they showed with the Sun/Jin flashbacks in season one.  Top that with the idea of nonlinear time, and the whole story gets much more complex (and interesting)

We've now seen Des come into contact directly with 2 different lostaways (or did he?).  Is he "special" in that way, or is he somehow more central to the story than some of the others?  Could Mr Widmore be involved with this centrality?

I saw parallels with the jewelry store clerk and the invisible man on Heroes (for those who watch).  It seemed to me like she was experienced in the nature of time, and was meant to mentor Desmond.  And if he hadn't been pushing the button "we would all be dead"??  Why?  Did the failsafe eliminate the threat to the world or not?

And hey, Penny is hot

Awesome epi, TI, I caught the picture thing too and wondered about that. It was a strange episode, but awesome. Right now 2 things hover in my "stayed up to watch LOST" brain:

1) ring lady tells Des it his destiny to enter the race, crash
  on the island, and push the button for 3 years. Same
  amount of time Juliet told Jack she had been on the island.
2) the ring lady looked like the woman that is standing outside
  Jack's cell in the previews for next week. Could it be?

GB - Ring lady was Fiannula Flanagan, outside the cage lady is Diana Scarwid, but apparently they were made up similarly to spark that reaction.  Which again brings up the similarites in looks again like with Sarah/Juliette
