Maybe Jack wasn't trying to tell Kate he is getting ready to kill/paralyze Benry.  Perhaps he mentioned that story to give Kate a pep talk: "I know you're afraid.  Give yourself five seconds and then get over it and run like hell."  Yeah, I know, I'm reaching, I need to remember Occam's Razor.

Also, Pen, The Feast of the Ascension might have been mentioned in Buffy, but the Catholic themes and imagery are so strong in this show that I think we have to go with that as being the reference.  The shout-out is a bonus.

After Jesus was resurrected, he hung around preaching for a while until his body ascended into heaven in the presence of the Apostles. Ascension Thursday, as it is usually known, is commemorated 40 days after Easter and is a Holy Day of Obligation for Roman Catholics (we must go to church.)  It's a major feast, way up there.  http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01767b.htm

This year it falls on May 17, which happens to be a Thursday, so no show that night.  If we believe the plane crashed in September 2004, then it is possible Mars was calling on or around May 20, the date the feast occurred in that year.

In church that day the priest will usually talk about salvation, about how when Christ ascended into heaven he redeemed mankind.

So, why did Marshal Mars mention this to Kate?  Maybe just to be snarky?  Maybe to say something to her about redemption (another huge theme in this show)?  

ETA: the acension is mentioned at least 3 times in the Bible, in the gospels of Mark and Luke and in Acts.  I suppose we could check a list of the verses carved on Eko's Jesus Stick to see if they coincide.  But I have a feeling we have seen the last of the stick.

I listened to the commentary for this one. I could probably give better insider info on that eppy than Josh Holloway did.

Cuse and Evangeline were on it too. They were pretty good, Evangeline offered quite a bit I thought.

i.e. When asked how she prepares for a new scrïpt, Kate said she first reads thru it quickly, as purely a fan, and takes note of her emotions to lean on later when she really studies the scrïpt for the shot. Of course there was more to it, I'm not doing the commentary justice.

They also mentioned how the writers/cast are pretty much both on the timeline of the show, going thru the eppy's in succession, not much skipping around. Cuse thought that was great for the show, Kate was mixed. She said, yeah, it keeps us fresh and honest... but also at a disadvantage cuz when she looks back at previous eppy's she says, knowing more about her char NOW, she would've played past scenes differently.
