David Duchovny is back (and Jesus is black) as Hank Moody in the new Showtime series Californication.  Moody is the best-selling author of God Hates Us All, South of Heaven, and Seasons in the Abyss--and yes, those are in fact titles of Slayer albums.  He and his family--girlfriend Karen (played with understated brilliance by Natascha McElhone) and daughter Becca-- moved from New York to LA when God Hates Us All was made into a craptastic Hollywood blockbuster called "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" starring none other than Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.  Karen has since left him for a publisher whose house she was hired to decorate, and he has developed a monumental case of writer's block.  The season opens with a lot of sex (hence the "fornication" in the title) as Hank "drowns himself in a sea of pointless pussy" (Karen's words, not mine )  He drinks too much, says exactly what he thinks, and gets in a ton of fights.  In short, he's hawter than he's ever been and the show's writing is funny, poignant, and quite brilliant really.  If you have the opportunity, the series comes highly recommended, and has already been renewed for a second season, so there's no chance of it going all Jericho yet.

Please discuss

I love this show. Duchovny does a great job playing Hank. (And yes, he's hot.) His agent is hysterical - the scenes of him and his secretary had me laughing out loud.

My favorite scene so far has to be when Hank had dinner with Karen and her fiancee and the others at Karen's house. When he and his date got so drunk and stoned and started having sex in Karen and her fiancee's bedroom, then they got caught and he puked all over the picture from bedroom wall.

Also when he stole his girlfriend's dog back from her married lover and took the wrong dog. Oh well, at least he ended up a hero with Becca because he had a dog to give her.

I think this show is very well written and acted, and I'm glad they've renewed it already.
