I'm gonna be honest with you. I'm not a fan of AI. If it disappeared from the face of the earth I wouldn't shed a tear.

Now, having said that, I'm going to be hypocritical. I'm auditioning in Atlanta at the GA Dome on August 14th. The reason I am doing this is because a friend persuaded me to go. But honestly, I love to sing. It's something I do because it's fun. Always has been. By auditioning I am giving myself the chance to say that I tried.

Here's my problem. I have trouble singing on demand. It's hard to sing in front of people, even though I use to do it all the time, because they're expecting me to be good. I think I have potential and that if I could get over the nervousness I could really succeed. With just five weeks or so left to go, I still have no idea what to sing or what to wear. The closer the date gets the more nervous I become.

I guess it's because even though I don't wanna be on tv right now, I still wanna do well. Does that make any sense?

I'm looking for songs that would be good accapella. Songs or artists that others might use for auditions.

I guess I'm just really nervous about it. Singing is my favorite past time. I love it. I didn't know where else to put this post so I hope it's okay if I put it in here. Like I said, I'm just nervous.

Wow, I don't like AI either, but I give you credit for being willing to make a try. *hugs*

I don't have a lot of advice to give you, except that maybe you should decide on one song or two right now, so you can practice, practice, practice them over the next few weeks.

Maybe you can get out and sing them in front of people you don't know as well - just to help with the nerves/singing on demand stuff.

Break a leg, and let us know how it goes!

I'm not a fan either DS, but I'll be rooting for you!!
I applaud your courage. This is something that takes a lot of courage to do, especially with Simon watching!!  http://www.oceanicworldairlines.com/forum/nfphpbb/images/smiles/icon_hugglepounce.gif

What is your range? Soprano, Tenor, etc?
This is in 5 weeks? You still have time to find that "right" song for you. I'm partial to Madonna songs but that is because she sounds right with my voice. So i guess you need to find that "fit" with your voice style.

Good luck. Please keep us posted!!

I`m not a huge fan of the AI show either, but I think it`s awesome you`re doing this and it shows a lot of courage!
I`ll definitely be rooting for you.
And I think Pen and Jeannie gave you some good advice - find a song or two as soon as possible, and keep practicing it. Finding one that suits your voice sounds like a good plan!

Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

Thanks ya'll. I appreciate the advice.

In high school, Pen, I sang alto and second soprano.

There a couple of Madonna songs that fit my voice range too.

I use to sing to Lisa Loeb, Jewel and was a big fan of Tori Amos. I'm really just looking for something to showcase my voice. I'm not looking to tap into Christina or any other Diva because that's not my case. But something soft yet really awesome. Like Pink, KT Tungstall or Fiona Apple. I'm think about Suddenly I See.

My big love though is musicals. I'm always singing songs from Rent and Moulin Rogue. Chicago is a favorite of mine. When Roxy's singing that funny hunny hubby song, you can believe I'm belting it out with her.

I wonder if I could do a few of those songs and maybe just pick one regular song. If so then I think I can feel better about being in front of them. Thanks again for the encouragement guys. I really appreciate it.

Also, thanks for not bashing me when I said I don't like American Idol. Everyone I know here In Georgia treats it like it's the only piece of television worth watching.

I don't at all like AI - but if you make it I'll watch!!
Its just like Survivor, I'll support people i know, I knew someone on there several years back. But i'm not much of the reality show fan.

I adore singing along with musicals, except I cannot sing very well LOLOL Chicago has some great tunes in it.

Thanks Pen. By going to the audition, I'm giving it a shot. So, you know, later I won't feel bad thinking maybe I could've made it but because I never tried I'll never know. Does that make sense?

Besides, my parents would shit a gold brick if I made it.

I don`t normally watch AI (I pretty much despise all reality shows :lol - but if you make it I will definitely try to watch the ones you are on.

And it makes perfect sense that you want to try it, so you can`t look back wondering what had happened if you did.

Do you know how many songs you need to have for the audition?

Ditto what those two just said. I will totally watch if you make it.

And you are so right to give it a shot. You never know until you try, but if you don't try you will always wonder what might have been.

Other than the fact that I'm still going crazy. LOL

I've thought of a couple of songs to do. Still not sure what to wear.

I'm still finding out about the audition process. I know where I'm going to audition and where. I don't know exactly how many rounds there are. I mean, the first time I auduition I know it'll be for the executive producers. If I pass that one, it's on to the producer nigel, I believe. If I pass that one, hello paula, randy and assh.. er I mean Simon.

I'll keep letting you guys know. Thanks for the support. It means a lot to me.

I just had a though. AI kicks back up in January. Lost starts back in February. I wonder if I made it on AI would I have to miss Lost cause I don't know if I wanna do that. Wonder if they'd tivo it for me? LOL

Oh no!
DS - you can't do this! You may miss LOST

I was thinking about you today as I was driving. I was on a long trip and was singing all these old songs from my childhood (very badly LOL) and I was wondering had you made any inroads.

You're right Pen. I can't miss Lost. I guess when they say "Welcome to Hollywood." I'll just be like, "No thanks. I'd rather be watching Lost." LOL

I did think of a song to sing at the audition. It's a Christian song and I think it suits my voice very well. It's by Jacki Valaquez(sp?) and it's called We Can Make A Difference.

I'm hoping to find another one. Something good. Wish me luck!

Well I've definitely decided on my songs. I'm gonna do the one I mentioned earlier. I think it's the winner. Also I decided on the Maureen part of Take Me Baby Or Leave Me from Rent.

This Friday I'm going shopping for my costume. I'm going with flashy. Something eye catching. A shiny top with cute capris ought to be nice. I guess I'll curl my hair and put in large hoop earrings.

I was really irriated that I can't wear shirts with logos or writing on them. I'd had this idea to wear a shirt that says "I'd rather be watching Lost."

That would be eye catching wouldn't it? Anyways, I'm all ready to go. I've got my reservations, my songs, my clothes are comming up and my ride down there. All I gotta do is get registered and hope they like me. Wish me luck.

BTW, in all honesty I'm more excited about this trip than I'm willing to let on. My parents are so excited and so are my coworkers. They all tell me I will make it and I'm afraid that I'll get down there and do the exact opposite. I'm nervous.

Since I put in for my vacation, and with the help of a friend who tells everyone I'm going, I've been asked to sing in the breakroom, backroom, you name it. So I'm starting to get better at it.

But I'm most comfortable singing in my bathroom while showering or whatever. Too bad I can't record myself in there. Then I'd really hit the big time. The bathroom is where I do my best singing.

It's because of the echo!
