Episode impressions:

Where did the drowning woman go, Joanna, – the Looking Glass? And if so, where is she now?

Jack is really taking the drowning of Joanna hard. “I decided not to go after her”: an example of a choice Jack makes that leads to consequences not good for the survivors. For Joanna, her death. Had he left Boone in the water, he probably could have saved her.

I never realized Claire was into astrology – which makes her going to the psychic make more sense.

Boone to Jack: “Who appointed you our saviour?” At that moment, Jack sees his father in the jungle. I found that interesting, as if because of his dad, he feels the need to be their saviour now.

And knowing that Christian is likely Jacob as a manifestation, I am still unsure why he appeared to Jack. I suspect to ensure he would continue the leader role he started. To remind him.

All the usual goodies with this episode though:

1. The spiritual connection between Locke and the island is first made clear to the viewer – interesting how it is Locke that explains to Jack, he needs to finish his quest. That quest, as we have all discussed countless times before, leads Jack to find water, and then the famous “Live Together, Die Alone” speech. All Jacob’s doing though. The manifestation of his father brought him there.

Oh, and Jack barely looked at his dad’s corpse

I found it interesting that they used Boone's character for this since Boone was getting Jack pens, asking him to help Rose instead of helping her himself, etc.  It was pretty contradictory but it did serve the purpose at the time.  Thought I'd point it out though.

I didn't take it as contradictory, but more of Jack exercising dictatorship - bc to Boone, he seemed to "think" Jack had a God-complex.

I must be losing my mind, because I have seen this epi twice, last night was my third viewing and there was tons of stuff I didn't remember.  Interesting how the rewatch frees you to pick up new stuff or see it in a different way.

When Joanna is drowing Charlie says "I don't swim."  Not "I can't," he says "I don't."  Maybe that is just the way a Brit would say it, but later on we see the FB of his dad teaching him to jump in the pool, Desmond foresees him drowning in an effort to save Claire, and in the end he does drown.  Did TPTB consciously load that much foreshadowing into these early epis?  Or is it merely to be expected that a show about an island would involve lots of drowning.

RE: Christian, I am wondering was he leading Jack to the water or was he leading Jack to Adam & Eve?  He also led Jack to two near-death experiences - the cliff and the cave in.

Super, I doubt they knew Dom's death would involve a drowning that early, but it certainly is an interesting choice of words to say "don't" instead of "can't." I forgot to make note of that exchange as I was too busy wondering if Joanna is now in the Looking Glass.

Ah, Christian. So interesting he is. I always thought he led him to water so he could be a saviour, but you bring up a good point about showing him Adam and Eve. A warning maybe?

This is the only mention of Adam and Eve isn`t it? I mean, we dont hear much about them later on. I wonder if Ben knows who they are - or perhaps Richard does...

yeah, poor Adam and Eve became just another loose end.  As did the black and white stones that appeared twice, never to be seen again.
