When Ben had cancer, how come with all this capablilty to travel off the islnd and teleport to other places and times, did Ben not go somewhere to get operated/treated.  Why risk himself to Jack?

Maybe he was hoping that he would heal from the surgery quicker if he stayed on the island? What with it's healing "powers".
