A recurring theme on the show is deception, cons by the Losties, the Others, even flashback characters.

Do you think that there may be a more important point to this common theme, ie: something critical to the understanding of the entire show?

Could the audience somehow be the part of an ingenius plot deception -- sort of a magic trick to have us all looking over to the right where the black smoke is when in fact the redshirt gang on the left is really our answer or clue.

Just a thought. Not sure where I'm going with this just yet but wanted to start my discussion.  http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/4755/popcornyc2.gif

I think I get what your saying.  We the audience are the mark in the long con by TPTB.

So they are just throwing out these hints and clues to make us guess all wrong? That would be kinda cool imo, if in the end the answer/solution is something no one has ever guessed (unless it was totally lame of course LOL)

That is what I was leaning at Rain.
If you see the current set up right now, two theories have much potential: parallel universes and purgatory. Yet, they are so obvious that I wonder if we are the real "long con" of this show: the viewer.

I was thinking about that too, in regards to the Hurley discussion we had in the other thread - that the characters we look at as "harmless" in the end will turn out to be the ones playing the big roles.

I didn't want to specifically mention Hurley as a potential game changing character in light of the numerous threads we already have discussing other characters as not what they seem but if you think back to the last few episodes, he has had a more front role in the plot. Look at how his actions last week impacted the fate of parachutist woman. Its likely without him setting off that flare, Patchy would not have showed.

I feel our original tendency is to discount characters like Hurley, Jin & Sun for example and they may turn out more important than we currently view them, or not what they appear. Sun certainly showed a different face in D.O.C.

Yes, Sun almost shifted her character all around in DOC. So I wouldn`t be surprised if some of the characters we deem "innocent" will turn out to play a bigger role than we suspect.

Interesting theory.  Hurley turns out to be a mass murderer, LOL

In "The Brig" we see this theme resurface again. Locke cons Sawyer to come along with him saying he has kidnapped Ben. He knows Sawyer would never kill Ben, yet he knows from the file he read that Sawyer would kill Sawyer.

But the biggest con may have been that Ben wanted Sawyer to kill Sawyer all along. This episode could have been a con within a con within a con....

We see many deceptions in the finale:

1. Ben was deceived that the shooters were executed.

2. Juliet's entire deception of her people played out favorably for the Losties.

3. The whole Mikhail/Ben/Hatch girls/Charlie/Des arc

Another wild thought, in all of Losts oddities the one reason it flies is that no matter how far out it gets, it is still believable. Life is full of Deceptions, the most straight and moral people tell lies, although not always intentional, Deception is in fact the thing that makes things believable.
I think we all lie some and probably lie most to the ones we love as somewhere in the human psyche we are afraid that the truth can cause a loved one to suffer or leave us.
IMHO Deception is one of the biggest themes in Lost, and the biggest deceivers are the writers.( insert winking smiley here )
